Non-combustible, flame retardant, digestive mechanism

Generally, non-flammable liquids and flame retardants include bromine-based flame retardants, chlorine-based flame retardants, phosphorus-based flame retardants, boron-based flame retardants, silicon-based flame retardants, and nitrogen-containing compounds. Sofa is classified as a boron-based flame retardant (boric acid flame retardant).

An effective flame retardant mainly for cellulosic materials. Therefore, it is widely used as a flame retardant for wood.

SOUFA is a sodium polyborate produced using a special technology and is expected to replace conventional halogen flame retardants.

Most flame retardants have a high acidity or alkalinity and have the disadvantage of accelerating the corrosion of metal such as metal fittings. However, SOUFA is neutral, and does not change the texture, scent, or color of wood or materials. It is also possible to give an ant-preserving effect.

As a mechanism of non-combustibility, nano-sized SOUFA penetrates into the interior of wood and the like, the active ingredient foams at the time of ignition, and shuts off air and heat to prevent combustion. As the resin is carbonized, the carbonized and foamed layers protect the interior from oxygen and heat.
SOUFA’s flame retardancy features film forming and foaming properties as advantages.

In the past, chemicals of about 400 to 600 kg / m2 were required to make noncombustible wood. However, if SOUFA can introduce 200kg / kg or more, wood will show non-combustibility. * If impregnated to about 130% by weight after drying, it will reach the level of non-combustible wood. In addition, since SOUFA is composed only of non-combustible components and water, water can evaporate after chemical introduction and drying, minimizing weight gain.

  • The white area is where soufa foamed in response to heat.

The feature is that it is easy to maintain the texture of wood because the amount of chemicals introduced is smaller than conventional products.

Very good compatibility with cellulose. Sofa contains boric acid at a high concentration, so simply by immersing the wood, a large amount of active ingredients can be introduced into the wood, making it non-combustible and flame-retardant. High concentration boric acid aqueous solution vitrifies in wood after drying. Pyrex glass is known as a heat-resistant glass containing boron, and this Pyrex glass is injected into wood. Sofa foams and forms a glass film when heated. This glass film also has the effect of wrapping wood and preventing ignition. It is also possible to use only SOUOFA as a digestive.

Until now, boric acid was only soluble in water at around 4%, so it was difficult to use it as a flame retardant or flame retardant. By creating boric acid-based ionic polymers using a special technology developed in our laboratory, we succeeded in producing a high-concentration boric acid aqueous solution containing more than 30% of active ingredients. This is Sofa.
In addition, it is now possible to prepare powder products.

This has made it possible to envisage application to resins. Boric acid flame retardants are expected as new flame retardants. Water-soluble materials are considered compatible. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene have been confirmed to be more effective when used together with starch. EVA, urethane and SBR latex have been confirmed to be effective. Although flame retardants have many untested parts, they have great potential.

Due to its good compatibility with wood, application to cellulose nanofibers (CNF) is also an area that can be expected in the future.
